How to Watch Local Video Files on your Chromecast

Chromecast is a device developed by Google to play media from mobile to a television or home audio system by utilizing the WiFi network. Google Cast technology enabled mobile and web apps are used to play the media. Screen Mirroring is also supported on the mobile devices running Android. Ideally Chromecast is designed to cast online content from your mobile or any other supported portable device to your television, but sometimes you may need to watch a local media file on your television and there is no straightforward way to do this, even the official Google Cast app doesn’t have support for this. Though there are several apps available on the Google play store which provides this functionality. I will list some of those apps here which I have personally tested myself and I will also tell you about the ones which I mostly use.

Playing local media files on Chromecast is a very network intensive process so make sure that you fulfill the following requirements before doing so:

  • The ideal distance between your WiFi router and Chromecast must be less than 15 feet.
  • For seamless video playback your router must be at least compatible with IEEE 802.11n-2009 standard. I recommend the following router  TP-LINK TL-WR841N 300Mbps Wireless N Router
  • If you can afford, then a wireless AC router is highly recommended as second generation chromecast is compatible with IEEE 802.11ac

Once the above requirements are met, you can enjoy your local videos without any issue. Now the next part is to get the apps required to run local media files from mobile to your television. There are quite a few apps available on the Google Play Store, I have tried most of them and found that only a few of them are actually useful. The ones that I found to be useful are as follows in no particular order:-

Out of the above listed apps, ES Chromecast plugin is, well actually just a plugin and you need ES File Explorer File Manager app to use this plugin.  The apps that I use most of the time to play local content are ES Chromecast plugin and MegaCast. So there you have it, that’s all that is required to play local content from any supported portable device to your television. If you have any suggestion/query you can comment below.

Edit: I have received few suggestions from reddit users regarding other ways of watching local content, if you want you can check them out, these are as follows:
